How to choose your five
If you are completely new, take one from each colour family and one specialty blend — a green, a red, a white, a yellow, and something like Gold Bali or one of the Super strains. That gives you the widest possible read in a single order. If you already know you prefer greens, use all five on greens and find out which green rather than which colour.
- Greens — the most popular family; Green Maeng Da is the usual starting point.
- Reds — Red Bali is the classic and the most-ordered red.
- Whites — the earliest harvest, and the lightest in colour.
- Yellows and specialty blends — Gold Bali, Nirvana and the Super series.
Then buy properly. Once a strain earns its place, the 4 oz bag or the 1 kilo bag is where the price per gram drops sharply. The sampler is for deciding, not for supply.
How to actually judge five strains
Twelve grams gives you enough of a strain to form a real view, but only if you do not run all five at once. Take one strain at a time and stay with it for several days before moving on — comparing two strains in the same day tells you very little, because the second one is always judged against whatever the first one did. Keep a note of which packet you are on. It sounds fussy and it is the difference between learning something and ending up with five vague impressions.
The other thing worth doing is running the strains you think you will dislike. Most people arrive with an idea of what they want based on what they have read, and a fair number find the strain they expected to prefer is not the one they end up buying.
